PRELIMINARY GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
The District Intern Preliminary General Education Program prepares teachers for the California Single Subject Preliminary Credential. District Interns must attend a 160-hour Pre-Service Orientation, focused on General and Special Education content, instructional initiatives, classroom management, State and Federal laws and requirements, and field observations.
Requirements for the California Single Subject Preliminary Credential in the Teacher Preparation Phase include satisfactory completion of the California Teaching Performance Assessments (CalTPAs) by the end of the Program.
The District Intern Program is tuition-free for those who culminate, are recommended for a credential, and serve within the District for two additional years.
The General Education Program incorporates:
• Current theory and practical application in each subject area.
• Pedagogical strategies for teaching in each subject area.
• Examination of subject area curriculum from a pedagogical perspective.
• Researched-based preparation courses aligned to the CalTPAs, CTC Standards, and LAUSD Initiatives.
• Innovative and well-designed preparation courses geared towards improving content area methodology and classroom instruction, meeting the subject matter competence requirement for the California Single Subject Preliminary Credential.
• Preparation courses taught by highly qualified experienced Instructional Facilitators who are trained professionals currently in the field of practice.
• Individualized Intern portfolios focused on self-reflection: compilations of growth and development as professional educators, collections of accomplishments, and opportunities to build relevant knowledge of students, schools, families, community, and teaching practices.
• Collaborative cohort model integrated with one-on-one coaching conversations, small group interaction, workshops, seminars, and innovative technology such interactive journals, collaborative best practice demonstrations, and effective teaching technique videos.
• Full-time ongoing Support Provider network with trained, like-credentialed, experienced teachers in similar subject areas, Teacher Advisers, and Specialists.
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
- Official transcripts for Bachelor’s Degree reflecting a minimum GPA of 2.7.

- Passage of subject matter competency exam (via Praxis and SSAT or CSET). Subject matter waivers are accepted for those who have completed their degree in a California institution and have completed a university waiver program. A university waiver verification letter is required for documentation. CSET test results expire after 5 years.
