PRELIMINARY GENERAL EDUCATION SINGLE SUBJECT PROGRAM

  • The LAUSD District Intern General Education Single Subject Program prepares teachers to earn a Preliminary General Education California Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, Math, or Science.

    The District Intern Program is tuition-free for those who culminate, are recommended for a credential, and serve within the District for two additional years.

    As a requirement for entry into the program, prospective District Interns must attend a 160-hour Pre-Service Orientation composed of four modules that focus on teaching English Learners, reading and literacy, special education, and classroom organization and management.

    The General Education Single Subject Program’s collaborative cohort model integrates one-on-one coaching conversations, small group interaction, collaborative best practice demonstrations, and effective teaching technique videos. 

    • Our highly-qualified Instructional Faculty delivers research-based courses aligned to the Teacher Performance Expectations (TPEs), CTC Standards, and LAUSD Initiatives, and are focused on developing each Intern’s classroom instruction and professional practice.
    • Individualized Intern Portfolio Practicum is focused on Intern self-reflection. The process is supported by trained Instructional Faculty Lead Mentor (IFLM) coaches. The Portfolio Practicum includes a compilation of evidence indicating growth and development as a professional educator and includes collections of real time video recordings of the classroom as well as coaching conversations.  The intent of the Practicum is to utilize relevant knowledge of students, schools, families, community, and teaching practices to increase the Intern’s effectiveness in the classroom. The end product of the Portfolio Practicum is the Individual Development Plan (IDP) which is then used in the Teacher Induction program. 

    Requirements for the CA Single Subject Teaching Credential include earning passing scores on both Cycles of the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA).

     

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Official transcripts for Bachelor’s Degree reflecting a minimum GPA of 2.7.

    • Passage of subject matter competency exam (via CSET). Subject matter waivers are accepted for those who have completed their degree in a California institution and have completed a university waiver program. A university waiver verification letter is required for documentation. CSET test results expire after 10 years.
    • U.S. Constitution (via coursework or exam).
    • LAUSD full time eligibility.
    • Authorization to work in U.S.
