Volleyball team captain feels sense of family

[After a years’ long hiatus, Lake Balboa College Preparatory Magnet – a K-12 campus formerly known as Valley Alternative Magnet – is reinstating its athletics program. One of the first teams to be re-established is girls’ volleyball. This is a significant undertaking, as most of the members of the team had never before played the game.]

I’m glad they’ve brought sports back. They used to have it when I was in elementary school, and I thought, “I can’t wait until I’m in high school so I can play.” Now, for me to be in this position – being captain and getting on varsity and getting to know these girls – it’s a great experience.

Before I joined the team, the other girls were just people on campus to me. Now, I would do anything for them.

I’d never had a uniform before, and it’s a wonderful experience. It gives you respect toward others, it shows great character.

I know that I’ve changed during these last few months. Before I would procrastinate doing homework and I always kept a low profile. Ever since I got the uniform, I’ve kept up with all my grades and now I’m really involved with the school.
