Los Angeles Unified Ushers in

2022-23 School Year With New Possibilities

Los Angeles, CA (August 15, 2022) — Today, Los Angeles Unified welcomed students, teachers, principals and school communities back into the classroom for the 2022-23 school year. Driven by a renewed focus on graduating all Los Angeles Unified students ready for the world, schools across the District are implementing Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho’s 2022-26 Strategic Plan

“As we welcome our school communities back into the classroom, I am driven by our commitment to unlocking the full potential of each Los Angeles Unified student,” Superintendent Carvalho said. “With the start of the school year, we are renewing our focus on students and remain dedicated to the implementation of our 2022-26 Strategic Plan. Los Angeles Unified will be the premiere urban school district in the nation.”

Los Angeles Unified’s new 2022-26 Strategic Plan serves as the District’s new vision to focus singularly on ensuring all of our students graduate ready for the world, fully prepared and inspired to thrive in college, career and their lives beyond our classrooms. The Strategic Plan ensures that the District is guided by academic excellence, student joy and wellness, engagement and collaboration, operational effectiveness and investments in staff.

“Today, we welcome students and families back with excitement and optimism,” Board President Kelly Gonez said. “Our educators and school staff are ready not just to support ongoing recovery, but to renew and sustain the joy of learning and unlock the potential of our students. Here’s to a great school year!“

Los Angeles Unified is filling all in-school vacancies with fully credentialed staff members, has launched the “All Families Connected” initiative to close the digital divide and connect families to reliable high-speed internet, expanded early education and unveiled the nation’s largest school-based air quality program. Los Angeles Unified will continue this momentum with an additional $1.9 billion in the 2022-23 budget in new investments that will strengthen academic excellence and support joy and wellness.

“We are thrilled to welcome students back to school and I want to thank all of our employees who have been working tirelessly to get everything ready for the new year,” Board Vice President Nick Melvoin said. “Our goal is to ensure all students make academic progress, receive socio-emotional support and stay safe on our school campuses. The start of school is a time of excitement, promise, and renewal and we’re committed to doing whatever it takes to help our kids reach their full potential.”

To address the ongoing health climate, back to school preparations include maximizing physical distancing as much as possible; strongly encouraging the use of masks; continuing comprehensive sanitizing efforts, including frequent hand washing; upgraded air filtration systems; and requiring vaccines for employees. The District also encourages all eligible students to get vaccinated. Los Angeles Unified will continue to align with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health requirements and guidelines.

Students and employees are no longer required to generate a Daily Pass QR code to enter school campuses, though the system will continue to be utilized to upload COVID-19 test results, host vaccination records and publish notifications.

“I look forward to the start of the school year,” Board Member George J. McKenna III said. “I have always believed I was born to be a teacher and have worked in schools my whole life. A new year holds so much promise for our youngest learners entering school for the first time, our elementary students transitioning to middle school, the new high school students and the seniors who are on the cusp of completing their K-12 careers. Our role is to deliver on the promise of ensuring that we provide our students with a quality education. Los Angeles Unified is ready, prepared and able to fulfill that promise to our families. Welcome home.”

“Welcome back to a super fabulous school year,” Board Member Mónica García said. “It has been my honor to welcome our students, families and employees Back to School for 17 extraordinary academic years. It brings me great joy, excitement and energy anticipating the life changing impacts of our collective work! I am super grateful to everyone on Team Kid who is doing whatever it takes to prepare all of our students to be Ready for the World! Si Se Puede!”

“I know that the entire Los Angeles Unified family has been working tirelessly to welcome our students back to our schools,” Board Member Scott M. Schmerelson said. “We are ready for a new year of learning!”

“Every student has talent to offer and every year I’m more excited to welcome children back to campus for their journey to discover it,” Board Member Jackie Goldberg said. “Los Angeles Unified is honored to partner with students and parents to ensure each student has the foundation they need to discover what they love and develop who they are.”

“Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I am thrilled to begin a new school year where we can imagine and realize infinite possibilities,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “With our shared vision of all students being ready for the world and our team focused on wellness, achievement and collaboration, I have every confidence that this year will be incredible for our entire Los Angeles Unified family.”
