Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Approves 2022-23 Budget, Informed by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho’s 2022-26 Strategic and 100-Day Plans
Los Angeles Unified’s $18.5 Billion 2022-23 Budget Implements a Student-Focused Approach, Including a $1.9 Billion Investment to Boost Academic Achievement and Support a Highly-Effective Workforce
Los Angeles, CA (June 21, 2022) – Today the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education unanimously approved the 2022-23 Budget and the 2022-26 Strategic Plan, as proposed by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. The Budget incorporates community voice and participation, the findings of Superintendent Carvalho’s 100-Day Plan, evolving information from the legislature in Sacramento, the development and emerging strategies from the 2022-26 Strategic Plan and the priorities of the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education, for a streamlined vision of the District’s future.
The over $18.5 billion budget incorporates an additional $1.9 billion in new investments that strengthen our commitment to academic excellence, joy and wellness and supporting students and employees by providing equity-based funding, social emotional learning, school greening and outdoor education, expanded learning opportunities, tutoring services, dual language programs, parent engagement, staff professional development and school safety and security.
“Despite the fact that we continue to face a number of structural budgetary challenges, Los Angeles Unified will continue to invest in our strategic priorities,” Superintendent Carvalho said. “This budget is values-based, enabling Los Angeles Unified to fund and support the critical priorities of this Board, even during a period of economic downturn. Guided by our Strategic Plan, we will continue to implement strategies that enhance and inspire student achievement, support our highly effective workforce and protect taxpayers’ investments.”
“The approved budget devotes critical resources toward long-term renewal and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and demonstrates a clear commitment to equity, achievement and sustainability,” Board President Kelly Gonez said. “Through this budget, our District is investing in key priority areas, including support for our highest-need students, early education opportunities for our youngest learners and social emotional learning to meet our students’ holistic needs.”
Between now and August, there will be a number of adjustments, including the state’s final, enacted budget and subsequent funding. Additionally, Los Angeles Unified will align priorities to deliver additional dollars for reinvestment into the District’s strategic priorities, culminating in a recommended budget presentation in August.
