Los Angeles Unified Honors Classified Workers and Their Commitment to Students
LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2022 – The Los Angeles Board of Education recognized Classified School Employee Week in a unanimous Board resolution authored by Board President Kelly Gonez. The resolution honors more than 32,000 classified staff who serve as an essential part of support to students and the school district. Classified employees include clerical and technical staff, bus drivers, instructional aides, library aides, special education assistants, library and media assistants, food service providers, custodians and others.
“Classified employees are an essential backbone of our public education system,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Their work often occurs behind-the-scenes, but it is invaluable and appreciated. We celebrate our classified employees today and every day for rising to extraordinary challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“Our classified staff went above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic, and they continue to provide essential services since schools fully reopened last Fall,” Board President Gonez said. “Los Angeles Unified could not operate without these employees, who give so much every day in service of students. We appreciate them during Classified School Employee Week and must extend that respect and acknowledgment every week throughout the year.”
“We are incredibly grateful to all our classified employees who continue to go above and beyond to meet the needs of our families and school communities in this unprecedented time,” Board Vice President Nick Melvoin said. “Thank you for all your hard work and dedication that helped make this year’s return to in-person learning possible.”
“Our classified employees deserve the same respect and appreciation as our teachers because without their support neither our schools nor this District could operate smoothly,” Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna said. “We all benefit from their hard work.”
"We are grateful to every Classified Employee for their efforts to serve our students and school community," Board Member Mónica García said.
“As a retired educator and longtime school site leader, I know firsthand how critical our classified employees are for the operational and instructional support and success that they provide for our students and staff throughout the District,” Board Member Scott M. Schmerelson said. “I have been particularly appreciative and humbled by their service and selflessness as first responders during the deadly pandemic that challenged every member of our Los Angeles Unified family.”
“We’re in the education field to make a difference, and Los Angeles Unified’s classified employees make an enormous lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of students – that’s incredible,” Board Member Jackie Goldberg said. “I’m honored to recognize the more than 32,000 classified employees for their irreplaceable contribution to supporting generations of young people inside and outside of the classroom.”
“Our classified employees play an essential role in the holistic success of our scholars both inside and outside the classroom,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “We appreciate your unwavering commitment to our students, families and communities. Your dedication, compassion and leadership are an example to us all. We celebrate you every day!”
