Statement from the Board of Education and Superintendent Austin Beutner on Offering Position of General Counsel To Interim General Counsel Devora Navera Reed
LOS ANGELES (May 4, 2021) – We are pleased to offer the position of General Counsel to Interim General Counsel Devora Navera Reed. She is a trailblazer as the first woman of color to lead the Office of General Counsel. Ms. Navera Reed has tirelessly served the Board and Los Angeles Unified during the pandemic as Interim General Counsel. We know that her continued leadership will be crucial as we look toward long-term recovery from the pandemic.
Official action will follow at an upcoming Board meeting.
Ms. Navera Reed joined Los Angeles Unified in June 2006 and served as Chief of the Education and Legal Services team since 2016, overseeing the areas of special education, school law, charter schools, equity and access, and constitutional issues. She was named Interim General Counsel for Los Angeles Unified in October 2020.
Ms. Navera Reed advises the Board of Education, Superintendent and senior leadership members on matters of major importance to Los Angeles Unified. She is also a co-lead for Los Angeles Unified’s We Are One campaign, working on ensuring access and equity to all students regardless of immigration status, and Census 2020 outreach efforts.
She previously was staff attorney for the Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles, representing foster youth in Los Angeles County.
Ms. Navera Reed has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and international studies from the University of Southern California and a doctor of law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law.
