Team Up to Provide COVID Vaccinations to the School Community

  • Superintendent Beutner lays out goal to make sure vaccinations are available for all families who have children in schools

  • Two School-Based Centers are opening, many more are needed

LOS ANGELES (March 22, 2021) – Superintendent Austin Beutner announced today that Los Angeles Unified is teaming up with St. John’s Well Child and Family Center to provide free COVID-19 vaccinations to the school community.

Vaccinations will be provided at Abraham Lincoln Senior High School in East Los Angeles and George Washington Preparatory Senior High School in South Los Angeles beginning Tuesday, April 6. Los Angeles Unified is currently providing vaccinations to Los Angeles Unified employees at seven schools and at Hollywood Park.

St. John’s, a long-time partner in schools, will provide the doses of vaccine and the clinical staff to administer the shots while Los Angeles Unified schools will oversee the outreach to the school community, appointment scheduling and operational support at the school sites.

“Vaccinating family members will help more kids to return to school as they can return to school without the fear of bringing the virus home,” Superintendent Beutner said. “This is just a start – our 1,413 schools serve a diverse set of communities spread across more than 700 square miles. We should have dozens more school-based efforts like this to provide the access to vaccinations which are needed in the communities we serve.”

“Schools are really at the center of a family’s life and if you want to give access to healthcare services it had to be centered around the school,” St. John’s Well Child and Family Center President and CEO Jim Mangia said. “The partnership between Los Angeles Unified and St. John’s Well Child and Family Center is going to create this unique opportunity to merge the access that schools provide to so many families to the COVID vaccine.”
