On September 8, 2016, the State Board of Education (SBE) approved key elements of a new state accountability system that replaces the former Academic Performance Index (API) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) which relied mostly on student test scores to measure progress. The new system includes multiple measures and is aligned with the eight state priorities identified in the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The new system will be implemented in 2017-18. This webpage summarizes the available information about school indicators, performance standards, and the criteria for determining technical assistance and intervention to districts.
Indicators of School Success
-
The SBE adopted state indicators of school success with performance standards:
- Chronic Absenteeism
- Suspension Rate
- English Learner Progress
- Graduation Rate
- College/Career
- Academic - English Language Arts
- Academic - Math
Beginning in Fall 2018, the State will identify schools based on performance on the above state indicators. For more information, click here.

2020-21 UPDATE: California School Dashboard
In March 2020, the U.S. Department of Education approved California’s request to waive statewide accountability and reporting requirements for the 2019–2020 school year. In June 2020, Governor Newsom approved Senate Bill (SB) 98, which prohibits the California Department of Education (CDE) from publishing state and local indicators in the 2020 Dashboard. Therefore, the 2020 Dashboard will report only: 1) Local educational agency (LEA) and school details (e.g., LEA/school address), 2) Student population data (e.g., enrollment data), 3)A link to DataQuest or a CDE web page that reports the 2019–2020 data collected in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) (e.g., graduation data).
The approval of SB 98 prohibits the identification of LEAs for technical assistance or intervention in 2020–2021 under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). As a result, LEAs eligible for differentiated assistance in 2019–2020 shall remain eligible through the 2020–2021 school year. The approval of the federal waiver removes the requirement to identify schools for Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) and Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) in 2020–2021. Therefore, schools eligible for CSI and ATSI in 2019–2020 shall remain eligible through the 2020–2021 school year.
