Lizette Patrón, Chief of Staff

Lizette Patrón was born and raised in Pico Union and graduated from Hamilton High school. She worked with InnerCity Struggle for 10 years, as the Site Organizer at Garfield High School, then becoming the Education and Communications Coordinator and later the Director of Education Policy. Lizette is a graduate of Cal State Northridge, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chicano Studies. She has over 10 years of experience in training young people of color to challenge existing inequalities in schools through communications. She led InnerCity Struggle’s media messaging, media strategy and popular education curriculum development for adults and youth.

Sonia Reza, Director of Administration

Sonia Reza has committed more than 13 years to the children in Los Angeles. Born and raised in Boyle Heights, she proudly attended Bridge Elementary, Hollenbeck Middle and Wilson High School. Her extensive career in government has taken her from City Hall, to the California’s Capitol in Sacramento and back again to Los Angeles. As Director of Administration, Sonia puts her experience and management skills to work to make sure that our office runs smoothly and she focuses on addressing the concerns of students and families in Board District 2 to help get them on the path to graduation. She is the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren, all of whom aspire to go to college after graduation.

Klarissa Palacios, Director of School & Community Relations

Klarissa Palacios was born and raised in Montebello, CA and attended local public schools. She worked as Assistant Director for various projects at East Los Angeles College for 7 years. Her father is a retired LAUSD teacher; mother is the Director at Eastmont Community Center. Following in her parent's footsteps, Klarissa is contributing to her community as the Director of Constituent Services for Board District 2. She obtained her Bachelor's degree in Political Science and her Master's degree in Public Administration from California State University, Los Angeles.

Mindy Kordash-Shim, Director of Communications

Mindy Kordash-Shim was born in Seoul, South Korea and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 8 years old. She spent most of her childhood in Southern California and Portland, Oregon before attending the University of Pennsylvania for her undergraduate studies. She joined a teaching corps in 2011, which kicked off her professional work as a Los Angeles educator. Her first ever teaching role was summer school at Stevenson Middle School, a Board District 2 school. She pursued a master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Administration and Public Policy at Loyola Marymount University. Since then, she has taught in different regions of Los Angeles including Westchester, Koreatown and South LA, with a heavy focus in family engagement, trauma-informed pedagogy and social justice. As the Director of Communications of Board District 2, Mindy effectively communicates Board Member's Mónica García’s vision, mission and goals through both traditional and social media platforms.

Berny Orantes, Director of Community Engagement

Berny Orantes is a highly creative and goal-oriented organizer with ten years of experience building community support for local and state campaigns. As a first-generation American, he has gained a deep passion for improving the socio-economic conditions that prevent his communities from reaching their true potential. He had the privilege of growing up in a safe, supportive, encouraging and loving household where his mother fostered his admiration for working, poor and immigrant parents. His heart’s passion is to be part of a historical breakthrough for marginalized communities. Berny is Board District 2 graduate, who earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cal Poly Pomona. He is eager to learn, grow, and work in our community.

Nataly Rocha, Field Deputy

Nataly Rocha was born in Huntington Park to Mexican parents who invested heavily into her public education. Her father taught in L.A. Unified for over 25 years and her mother served as a school community representative for over 18 years. Nataly is a proud graduate of Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School, a Board District 2 school. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in Social Welfare and Spanish and in 2011, she began her career as an educator. Nataly spent seven years teaching 1st through 3rd grades in South L.A., East L.A. and Echo Park. In 2013, she earned a Master’s in Urban Education from Loyola Marymount University. As Field Deputy for Board District 2, she is excited to learn and build relationships with our community.
