The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Academic English Mastery Program is a comprehensive, research-based program designed to address the language and literacy needs of African American, Mexican American, Hawaiian American, and American Indian students for whom Standard English is not native. The program incorporates into the curriculum instructional strategies that facilitate the acquisition of standard and academic English in classroom environments that validate, value, and build upon the language and culture of the students.
Mission StatementThe mission of the program is to assure that students, whose primary language does not match the language of instruction, will have equal access to California State standards-based content curriculum and post secondary career opportunities.

2020 CLR Virtual Summer Institute
The Academic English Mastery Program hosted its 2020 Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Virtual Summer Institute on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Dr. Sharroky Hollie, Executive Director of The Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning, was the keynote speaker. More than 300 teachers and administrators from across L.A. Unified participated virtually. Following the keynote speaker, participants attended breakout sessions facilitated by AEA and AEMP coordinators, specialists, and instructional coaches. Grade specific sessions were available for teachers of Kindergarten up to high school.
