    Congratulations to student designer Julissa Gutierrez of Wilmington Middle School! 
    Her design was selected to represent "The A in STEAM," and will be used on promotional materials for "The A in STEAM" Gala, which will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Banning High School.  Designs were also submitted from Banning SH, Bethune MS, Carson SH, Dana MS, Gompers MS, HArts Academy, Narbonne SH, Peary MS, Rancho Dominguez Prep, and Steven White MS.  All students who participated will be recognized at the Gala and receive certificates for their excellent designs.

  • Honoring Black History Month in LD South

    Rory Pullens and the Arts Education Branch sponsored assemblies in LD South in appreciation of Black History Month:

    • Fremont SH (2/8): Bill Overton's book presentation - The Media: Shaping the Image of a People
    • 118th St EL (2/12) and Markham MS (2/13): A musical performance by the Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra 
    • 186th St EL (2/16): A dance performance by the Impact African Dance & Drum Ensemble
    • Museum of African American Art (2/22): Carson SH and Dymally SH as well as other high schools in the District toured the museum and watched a documentary on the events leading up to the Selma March of 1965.  Students were then able to engage in a dialogue with distinguished panelists: Ambassador Andrew Young Jr., James Perkins Jr., and Professor Bernard Lafayette Jr.

  • DEADLINE EXTENDED: "The A in STEAM" Logo Contest ends Friday, 2/9/18

    "The A in STEAM" Logo Contest deadline has been extended to Friday, February 9, 2018, 5pmWe are requesting one entry or logo design from each LD South secondary school. The winning design will be used on print and media to advertise "The A in STEAM" Gala and a grand prize will be offered to the student designer.  All participating entries will be posted on LD South's website and all participants will be recognized and receive certificates at "The A in STEAM" Gala at Banning High School, on Saturday, April 28, 2018.  For more information, please click here.

  • Social and Emotional Learning Through the Arts PD (2/6/18, Hacienda Heights, CA)

    This in-person PD, sponsored by LACOE’s Project TEAL, will address the research that supports the benefits of the arts and arts integration on student mental wellness and the development of the social and emotional skills. VAPA strategies that engage students int he competencies identified by CASEL will be introduced and practiced, as well as a review of the new SEL guidelines in California. Guest presenters included Veronica Alvarez from LACMA, Laurel Butler from UCLA and Mathew Agustin from the Los Angeles Arts Education Collective.  For more information and to register, click here.

  • Call for Submissions: 2018 LAUSD Student Film Festival

    The Arts Education Branch will be holding its 4th Annual Student Film Festival at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on May 24th, 2018. Red Carpet starts at 6pm and film screening begins at 7pm.  Films can be any genre (drama, documentary, comedy, thriller, animation, etc) but must be under six minutes in length and made during the 2016-17 or 2017-18 school year, by LAUSD students, either in a LAUSD classroom setting or as part of a principal-approved arts program or after-school program.  To view the submission guidelines and see the application, please click here.

  • Modern Band Workshop Series (2/3/2018, 9am-12pm, Miramonte EL)

    Little Kids Rock, an LAUSD arts partner, is offering a Modern Band Workshop Series on Saturday, 2/3 2018, from 9am-12pm at Miramonte EL, 1400 E 68th St, LA, CA 90001.  This 3-hour workshop allows teachers to select 2 out 3 classes offered:  Hip-Hop 101, Instrument Repair, and Modern Band Jam Facilitation.  For more information and to register for the workshop, click here.
