  • Substitute Teacher Qualifications

    LAUSD Requirements:
    ñ    AA Degree or 60 semester units of coursework from an accredited college or university
         o    (must include 3 semester units of English: College Reading and Composition)
    ñ    A Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher
    ñ    Early Childhood Education Teacher Examination
    ñ    Early Childhood Education Writing Assessment
    ñ    Early Childhood Education Interview
    ñ    Pediatric CPR, First Aid and AED (Online courses do not qualify)
     

    ñ Per Senate Bill No. 792 (SB792) a person will not be allowed to work or volunteer at a day care center if he or she has not been immunized against Pertussis, Measles, and Influenza. Only one dose of Pertussis and Measles given at any prior time is required. Each employee and volunteer shall receive yearly influenza vaccination between August 1 and December 1 of that year. The influenza vaccination is the only one that may be declined but this must be accompanied with a declination letter written by the employee on an annual basis.

     



    z   Within 2 years from the date of employment, a substitute teacher’s status will be reviewed and must qualify with:
          o    24 semester units of Child Development course work
          o    175-days work experience, or ECE field course work

    California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Requirement:
    ñ    To obtain a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit the state requires:
         o    12 semester units of Child Development course work
         o    16 semester units of General Education course work including (must include Humanities, Social Science, Math/Science, English)
         o    50 days of experience in an early childhood licensed classroom, or ECE field course work from an accredited college or university

    Probationary Teacher Qualifications

    LAUSD Requirements:

    ñ    A Child Development Teacher Permit or higher or a Regular Children’s Center Permit
    ñ    Early Childhood Education Teacher Examination
    ñ    Early Childhood Education Writing Assessment
    ñ    Early Childhood Education Interview
    ñ    Pediatric CPR, First Aid and AED (Online courses do not qualify)

    OR

    ñ    Multiple Subjects Credential
    ñ    A Child Development Teacher Permit or a Regular Children’s Center Permit
         o 12 units of Child Development course work
         o 3 units supervised field experience in ECE setting


    ñ   Early Childhood Education Teacher Examination
    ñ   Early Childhood Education Writing assessment
    ñ   Early Childhood Education Interview
    ñ   Pediatric CPR, First Aid and AED (Online Courses do not qualify)

    California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Requirement:
    ñ    To obtain a Child Development Teacher Permit the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires:
          o 24 semester units of Child Development course work
          o 16 semester units of General Education course work including (must include Humanities, Social Science, Math/Science English)
          o 175 days of experience in an early childhood licensed classroom, or ECE field course work from an accredited college or university or 3 units of ECE field work
