James Thurmond, Director, IT Security
As Director of IT Security, he is responsible for protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the District’s information assets that support over 700,000 students and 60,000 employees.
James Thurmond has over 25 years of experience related to information systems and security. He began his career in the U.S. Army directly after high school and returned to his home town Chicago where he worked as an Information Systems Auditor, Correctional Officer, Police Officer, IT Projects Administrator, and Deputy Commissioner of Information Systems for the City of Chicago’s Building Department.
James moved to California in 2006 where he worked as a Director of Development for a multinational engineering firm, and as a security consultant through various system integrators for Los Angeles World Airport, Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Airport, City of Los Angeles, and Sony Pictures.
He received his master’s degree in Information Systems Management from DePaul University and his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Chicago State University. He is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT).
