School Site Evaluation/Vulnerability Assessment
LAUSD administrators can request a School Site Evaluation/Vulnerability Assessment from the LASPD at no charge. Once the assessment is completed, the LASPD will compile the results of the assessment and schedule a meeting with the school site administrator(s) and/or Local District to personally debrief and discuss the findings of the School Site Evaluation/Vulnerability Assessment to identify best practices to aid you and your staff in improving student, staff, and campus safety School Site Evaluations are a critical component of the Los Angeles School Police Department’s (LASPD) approach to enhancing campus safety.
The LASPD has specially trained officers with extensive experience and practical knowledge in safeguarding schools, who will conduct a School Site Evaluation (SSE)/Vulnerability Assessment of each site. The LASPD officers will work jointly with the staff of each school to gather data to assess the physical structures of the campus and the safety procedures of the school site.
Implementation of the SSE ProgramIn September of 2012, , the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the United States Secret Service (USSS), and the LASPD worked collaboratively to develop computer software specially designed to provide School Site Evaluations/Vulnerability Assessments to school site administrator(s) to assist in improving safety to students, staff, and school sites.
The Active Shooter attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012, prompted a significant response from President Barack Obama. On January 16, 2013, President Obama presented his Executive Order “Gun Violence Reduction Executive Action”, with the stated purpose to, “Provide law enforcement, first responders and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.”
In April 2013, the LASPD began conducting School Site Evaluations in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). School Site Evaluations/Vulnerability Assessments are an integral part of LASPD’s comprehensive approach to assist administrators in improving student/staff safety, develop campus safety best practices, and enhance the implementation of the Safe School Plan at each school.
