LAUSD School Mental Health (SMH) supports educators by utilizing a multi-tiered comprehensive approach that is trauma informed and leads to better outcomes for student achievement.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that 35% of children have experienced more than one traumatic event, and over half of all U.S. children have experienced at least one traumatic event. A single traumatic event can cause anger, mood swings, social withdrawal, difficulty with concentration, intrusive thoughts, interrupted sleep and nightmares. These symptoms can impact a student’s ability to function and learn. Together, SMH professionals and staff can help support student’s mental health to increase academic functioning and overall resiliency.
