Know Your Graduation Requirements
L.A. Unified has a menu of options for high school credit recovery programs that allow participating students to recover credits needed for graduation. Schools can select which program best suits their budget, resources, and student need. Below is an outline of the offerings.
Schools should refer to District policy that pertains to graduation requirements and credit recovery.
1. Adult Education Partnership
The Division of Adult and Career Education provides after-school classes through extended hours as part of the Zero Dropout program strategies. Students participate in small class sizes and personalized instruction as they regain needed credits.
Auxiliary periods provide opportunities within the school day for students to retake failed courses. The number of courses and time frame will depend on room in each school’s master schedule to add auxiliary periods. Credit recovery opportunities may also be offered in a zero period depending on teacher availability and student need.
3. Edgenuity Programs
The Edgenuity program offers online self-paced credit recovery courses in two models:
Edgenuity Virtual: Students engage in fully online learning and assignments, with a assistance from the Edgenuity virtual tutor. Computer lab support is provided by a mentor teacher credentialed in any subject, who assists students with study skills and test preparation strategies.
Edgenuity Blended: The online instruction is augmented by a teacher credentialed in the subject being taught. Students can receive differentiated teaching to meet their needs, and assignments and tests are completed on the Edgenuity platform.
4. Independent Study
To provide maximum flexibility for students to regain A-G credits, students can enter into a written agreement or contract that stipulates the manner of assignments granted, frequency of assignments, and the time frame to meet with the teacher for additional instructional support. This program provides maximum flexibility for students who have competing family or employment demands outside of school.
5. Performance Assessment Student Support (PASS)
The PASS programs for math and ELA provide a unique opportunity to recover credit for failed courses by focusing on course content not mastered. Each course is and structured into modules based on clusters of standards. Students progress through the modules at their own pace, and as they experience challenges meeting mastery teachers provide differentiated content to meet specific needs.

6. RIG (Recovery + Intervention = Graduation)
This partnership between a comprehensive high school and the neighboring continuation high school provides the opportunity to recover credit for failed courses. Students take up to two pass-thru-classes during the school day with a continuation teacher, while remaining enrolled at the comprehensive site. RIG is successful for students who need a small class setting for credit recovery, and who want to participate in school events and activities such as varsity athletics.
7. Students Taking Action for Readiness (STAR 17)
This is a unique grade increase opportunity that requires extended time and additional work from students who have not mastered course content standards within a given semester. Students whose grades are within ten percentage points from a “C” can participate in STAR 17 for an alternative pathway to demonstrate mastery and raise their grade. This is valuable for students to graduate ready for admission to a 4-year college whose minimum grade requirement for eligibility is a “C.”
