A successful first-year as a STEAM Magnet is coming to a close at San Pascual STEAM Magnet, but the learning is not stopping. The momentum of the empowered learner movement at the school continues to draw attention from the best and brightest educational minds from throughout the country. A world-renowned expert in the field of education, Harvard professor, Dr. Ruben Puentedura will be on campus to discuss the implications of the SAMR model on the students of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Puentedura, author of the SAMR model which continues to transform the way educators see how computer technology might impact teaching and learning, will speak to LAUSD Instructional Technology Facilitators about research he recently conducted on the impact of technology on student learning.
This visit comes on the heels of a successful six-month stretch for San Pascual STEAM Magnet. Superintendent of the Year, Michelle King, visited the school earlier this year. Following the visit, the school’s student ambassador, Yvette Fuentes, was selected to introduce Superintendent King on stage at the Magnet Schools of America Conference in April.
In addition to visits by King and Puentedura, the school is home to Cal Tech scientists, Dr. Julius Su and Dr. James Maloney, who created the revolutionary science app, “SKIES”, which is transforming the way students interact with the Next Generation Science Standards curriculum. The app is empowering the students to become the computational thinkers and designers who will be the leaders of the 21st century.
The impact of the presence of such leaders in the field of education has reverberated throughout the campus, and has inspired students to think of new and creative ways to show their learning. This was clearly evident at last weekend’s L.A.’s Best Gala. Five students from our school were honored at the gala for their excellent interviewing work with the Kid Press after school program. The students used these skills to interview Dr. Puentedura and produced a 30-minute documentary on the power of the SAMR model and its impact on the school’s empowered learner movement.
At San Pascual STEAM Magnet, our vision is CLEAR!
