Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP)

Overview

Legislation establishing the Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) Program was enacted in 1973. Basic to the program is the concept that many physical and mental disabilities can be prevented, or their impact lessened, with early recognition and treatment of defects. CHDP is a preventive health program serving children and youth up to 18 years of age. It is a financial need based program that makes early health care available to children with health problems as well as to those who seem well. Eligible children can receive periodic preventive health assessments and referrals with free follow-up care when indicated. A second part of the CHDP legislation requires all children entering first grade to have a physical exam. This assessment must be done within 18 months prior to entry into the first grade or within 90 days after admission. Click here for a list of LAUSD school-based clinics.
