Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS), initially implemented in the 1998–1999 school year, were created as an alternative to the Gifted/High Ability Magnet program to service gifted/high ability learners throughout the District at resident schools. SAS is the GATE instructional program for resident students. SAS supports the District’s commitment to strengthen District services for students identified as gifted, highly gifted, and students who demonstrate superior academic achievement with appropriate documentation (K–12). SAS also reflects the District’s commitment to ensure equitable access, excellence and accountability to high quality gifted/talented programs districtwide.
Schools for Advanced Studies serve as District demonstration sites for innovative and research-based differentiated curriculum and instruction for gifted/high ability learners in multiple categories. The selection of a school as a Schools for Advanced Studies site is based on proven commitment and ability to offer a sustained, highly effective, exemplary gifted and talented education (GATE) program that includes essential GATE/SAS program components:

2. Instruction and Academic Achievement of GATE Learners
3. Knowledgeable and Skilled Staff
4. Parent, Family, and Community Engagement
5. Social-Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners
6. Budget Fidelity
7. Innovation and 21st Century Competencies
8. Program Reporting and Management
The SAS model, which is in alignment with AB2313 and the State Board of Education Recommended Standards for Programs for Gifted and Talented Students, explicitly supports the District’s agreement with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). It is District policy that schools must reapply every five years for SAS designation. Independent charter schools and magnet programs are not eligible for the SAS designation.
Transportation services are not provided. Parents are expected to provide transportation.
Please contact the GATE/SAS coordinator at the SAS site directly to inquire about the services offered at the school for gifted/high ability learners. Each SAS site must adhere to State and District GATE/SAS requirements; however, schools have flexibility in the thematic emphasis, differentiated instructional strategies, and enrichment opportunities provided to students.
